Is there an easy way to specify free delivery on a range of items (all in same category) without having to go through each item and mark it for free postage?

The easiest way to make mass changes to any range of products is to use the import function, via a CSV spreadsheet.

First, do a complete export. Then, thin down the sheet to just the products you want to change, putting in the new/altered details.

Finally, create an import template with all of the fields set to "Ignore". Assign the SKU to the correct column (required) and then just the fields you're changing.

This is a safe way to update your product database.
