Apart from setting Bluepark up for zero vat for Jersey / Guernsey is there anything else we should be doing / checking?

Does everyone in the Channel Islands not pay VAT or is it business users only?

Do we have to get any extra info from the shopper to keep the VAT man happy?

We have been selling to the channel islands for a year or so and have really done a lot of research on this.

Firstly there is no vat in the channel islands. So you simply mark the product as zero vat. If you look on your vat return there is a box for sales to the channel islands, so all you have to do is put the sales in there. It is very simple.

To make the vat man happy you just have to provide proof that the items have been posted to the islands, copy of delivery address, postage account etc. You cannot invoice the islands and delivery in the uk or you pay vat.

Delivery is a problem as some couriers charge an absolute fortune, but we use standard royal mail and parcelforce 48, and it's no more hassle.

If you make it clear you sell to the islands, and take the vat off, and charge reasonable delivery, you should get a lot of customers.

hey chaps. thanks for drawining my attention to this.

Apart from setting Bluepark up for zero vat for Jersey / Guernsey...I decided it would be good to setting Bluepark up for zero vat for Jersey / Guernsey now, but I thought that just going into site > tax rules and by unchecking the checkbox on the right hand side of the page to make Jersey and Guernsey unactive would do the trick but it hasn't (I just pretended to be a Jersey customer and it still charged me VAT)

at the top of the tax rules page (with the list of countries) I have the default rate set at 15 and the drop-down set to "VAT Countries: Within the EU" and the "Thresholds Apply:" se t to "per-order". Am I doing something wrong?

ADDED 20 mins LATER: actually just played a bit more and noticed (by scrolling down) that EU countries have 15 next to them. So I understand that. which now makes me not understand why, when Jersey and Guernsey have a Zero next to them my site still charges them VAT. I also discovered (from reading the help files!) what deactivating a country does.

so... how do I turn off VAT for Jersey and Guernsey?

cheers, Col

We have Jersey & Guernsey set to zero VAT in the tax rules but in the shipping manager class them as UK rather than Europe. This way, the VAT gets taken off automatically. Also, if you use Royal Mail to send stuff to the Channel Islands you have to attach a customs form to the front of the parcel, it's called a CN22.
