How or what do people use for inbound links from other sites...
at the moment my signature on here is like the only inbound link to our site... We have registered with Dmoz but thats as yet to go active... been about 4 months in the waiting.
just wondered if there are any other places we could push it out to
Cheers
Adam
Hi Adam
Don't hold your breath for Dmoz - we have been trying for over 2 years to get on, and have submitted twice with no luck.
There are a number of ways to build links. The best ones are those that link to you from reputable sites (preferably with a Google Page Rank of some sort) in a related area - either other companies in the same or similar business, or trade associations and organisations/forums etc. in the industry. To build these takes time - you need to approach them with a well formulated request for a link request back to your site (usually the only way they will do this is in exchange for a reciprocal link). Next best is to to exchange with any other reputable sites (avoid link farms, which are just websites of links with no real content).
There are also a large number of business directories you can register with to get links, most of which are free, though some will charge a fee. Here are some examples
http://www.freeindex.co.uk/ (mhtml:{013DB856-8CE8-4066-B6F9-9AE2D166603D}mid://00001912/!x-usc:http://www.freeindex.co.uk/)

http://www.hotfroguk.co.uk/ (mhtml:{013DB856-8CE8-4066-B6F9-9AE2D166603D}mid://00001912/!x-usc:http://www.hotfroguk.co.uk/)

There are lots of others - just do a Google search on online directories. I would particularly look for those in your industry as they will provide the most relevant links.
I personally would avoid companies that provide a link-building paid for service - the quality of these can be very suspect.
There are some products that can help automate the process - might be worth asking Dave how he is getting on with IBP, as I believe he's using it for link buiding.
The last thing to mention is that with Google changing the way they index and rank websites, I believe that links will become less and less relevant, though it never hurts to have them anyway, as you can actually get direct business through them if you get the right, relevant links.
Hope that helps
Regards
Pete
PS - happy to exchange links with you if you want to?

great response dave... as always
The current flavour of the month with google (or so I'm lead to believe from the reading I do) is links in through blogs, forum posts and the biggie is links from facebook and twitter.
I use a mixture of twitter and facebook to create immediate links and I also have two or three news articles a day written for the news.icegems.co.uk blog/news feed and those also create lots of links (and get picked up and indexed by google news).
My news blog feeds into twitter which feeds into my home page and that puts new content on the site all the time which google seems to like.
Also look at getting a del.ic.ious account, stumbled upon and digg - have a search round there are some great articles on how to use those three to help build links each one takes about 5-10 minutes a day to use (I have got very slack on using these three though because you can't just tag your own site you need to leave reviews for other sites too).
Hope that helps.

We use Twitter a bit as well, but I'm a bt confused about the value of these - do they provide links back to your site that help with Google PR? I thought they were NOFOLLOW links?
Hi Nadine,
Don't know how you did it but the twitter and news feeds on your website look excellent.
In my industry (toner cartridges & inks) it's very difficult to know how you could use twitter etc because they are business related products and not consumer products as such. You don't get much news in this industry which anybody would be interested in.
When did you last hear something like
"Russell Grant pulls out of big brother because a toner cartridge exploded in his face" :D
I probably have tunnel vision when it comes to this but because I am from a technical and not marketing/pr background I don't find this sort of thing easy :(

Google are now using twitter at the top of their search listings so they are definately taking more notice of them.
A good example would be to search for the news topic of the day - say Haiti and see what google brings up not sure it helps with PR exactly but it definately helps with the bigger picture.

I can't write to save my life but I pay someone who can ;)
With twitter especially because you only have 140 characters it is quite easy to find something to say - for example use it to offer discount codes or to inform of new stock and so on. I generally tweet discount codes and so on in between the news feeds and a small amount of personal stuff although generally my facebook account has my personal stuff and just use twitter for the business stuff.
Apparently people like to buy from people.

Hi Nadine,
We actually do this already but none of the links have ever been picked up by google (with the exception of twitter) but never realised that you had to review other sites to validate your own :( (can you confirm this is right as dont want to waste my time reviewing sites for nothing :asleep:.
looks like I'll be busy this afternoon then.
and just so you feel better Pete, thanks for YOUR post :D

How did you get the twitter feed on your website?
Now here is the funny thing - we had been trying to feed the news content into the site and couldn't get it working but we had it going into twitter. I literally had a flash of inspiration that I had seen twitter feeds on other peoples pages and actually it is really to do (you have no idea how many hours had been spent on trying to feed in the news content)
Within twitter scroll to the bottom of the page and then select goodies then widgets (or just click here - http://twitter.com/goodies/widgets )
You may need to keep refreshing this page until you see a little icon on the left hand side and you will see one to add to your site (and facebook etc). For some reason they dont show up immediately but if you refresh the page enough you can get them.
Then I just set up a block and posted the code into the block and set it live.

Hi Pete,
As you know I am using IBP for SEO which includes the building of links.
Very good tool but am struggling at the moment to find the time to use it to it's full potential.
It does highlight sites you could exchange links to, what there page rank is etc and will even send them an e-mail asking to exchange links.
It's certainly a very good piece of software and I would recommend it but make sure you have enough time to learn and use it to it's full potential. Otherwise, employ someone to do it for you.
Ignore - I've found it - looks interesting!!
nadine,
It is a business promoter..
it rates your site against others that are you closest rivals. and shows you what you could do to improve on things like keywords, inbound links, etc etc.
we have used it to make our keywords alot better than they first were.
Thanks - just on there now, it looks interesting, very interesting in fact - I can feel a purchase coming on (but not until I've paid for my new stock, I'm sat on my hands).
Icegems, I just wanted to say your site and Tweets look great. I think I know what I am doing for the rest of the day! I have my Facebook page automatically linking to our Twitter page but maybe I should do it the other way round and put a block on like you have.

Thank you! I think tweets are better and easier to go into facebook, I've got them feeding into the facebook business page (which took forever to work out) but I can't get the news feeds which are going from the blog into twitter to go to the business page as well so that is what I've wasted a morning trying to sort out - not the end of the word just bugging me - they were feeding into my personal page which is boring for my friends and family to read.
I like the idea of the block and would add it to our site but our clientele (silver surfers etc) get scared when the phone rings let alone joining social networks and reading blogs etc lol.
i'm not sure how well it would work for us :)
(present company excluded of course ;))
Go on Nadine, you know you want to :D
I do, I do, I do but I have four brand new lines that have just finished manufacturing and I have to magic the payment from somewhere so for once in my life I'm being sensible and this will have to wait for a week or so!
Nadine, get the demo version to start and see whether you get on with. well worth it even if you decide not to get it :)

We share clientele(!) and I understand what you mean but whilst I do like the thought of people reading the content given it costs me so much I mainly have the content written so that it helps with the search engines.
The tweets show google that you haven't just designed a site and uploaded it and left it to rot but that it has fresh content on a regular basis and so for me the twitter box is there just for that - to give the site fresh content and keep Mr Google happy (until he changes his mind again and wants something different!). Therefore imho it doesn't really matter what the tweets are so long as they are mainly relevant and help boost SEO.

Yes I think I will do - by then hopefully the bank accounts won't be crying as much as they are now!

That's good because being a bloke my tweets won't make any sense at all :D
my sentiments exactly dave :)
on that note i'm going to give it a go, it cant hurt after all.

Thanks Mitsy...all better now :).

You need to add in HTML view (or source view) not content view.
yeah thats where i put it..
deleted it then put it back in and it worked.. very odd...

I have my business Facebook page linking to my tweets but how did you get it to work the other way round to only go to your business FB page and not your personal one. I just tried it out and FB said there was a problem and to basically go away.
You can do it through Hootsuite - if you go into the settings, then Social Networks. Click Add social network, click on Facebook, then the option to add pages appears under Facebook so you can add your business page.

Well, that is easy to check - just look at the source code and search for 'nofolow'. I found it before every link.
On the other hand, you may be raising an interesting question:
When the Google thingyboby arrive a website and hits a 'nofolow' tag, that obviously will means that it will not follow the link.
BUT
It did found a link - would it be possible that it reports back to HQ that there was a link - that means that Google does counts that link as another vote in favour of your site?
That would make sense - After all, the links are there - the links are there, and are telling the world that the site they are pointing to is worth something - just with a little friendly request: 'please do not follow the links' - just a dry technical request.
If that would be the case - then the 'experts' are all wrong - telling us not to bather with sites that uses 'nofolow'.
Any takes?

Hi Niel, I know getting inbound links is very difficult but we use
Blogger
Wordpress
Facebook
Twitter
Opera
some directories
Delicious
Ecademy
It takes time to work a way round some of this but...
By blogging on either Blogger or Wordpress, you can set your Facebook Notes to automatically import each post and highlight it on your wall.
Twitter can also receive the updated you put on Facebook as can LinkedIn.
You can see an example on our Eco Blog (http://greeneastltd.wordpress.com) and see that the same posts are showing on our Facebook fan page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fakenham-United-Kingdom/Green-East/53382142342) (go to the Notes tab) without me having to type them all twice. Also including links on the discussion boards works well.
Most important point is to write relevant topics and link key words back to your site without looking like some sort of spam site. I am still practicing the art of writing interesting stuff, but the rest of it works :-D
I'd be glad to know if I missed anything...

Hi
Can you tell me how you get it to go into your Facebook page? I've got the posts going into Twitter but twitter feeds my personal pages and not my business pages. As an ideal I'd like the blog posts to go straight into my facebook business pages and this may be the way to do it.
Many thanks.
Taking a different view to facebook, and twitter links. I haven't got time to sit there tweeting so I have put the add this button, right at the top of my side bar where most people will see it and hopefully use it.
Seems to have worked, getting about 5 links a day for my new site, mainly to my space, facebook, digg, and delicous.
The other site is getting a few as well mainly on twitter.
I would rather have lots of links spread about on other peoples profiles than lots on just mine.

I've never had any links from AddThis so either need to move it or lose it.
T oget a blog to import to Facebook, go to the Adds & Pages Manager in the bottom left of the screen.
Select Page Manager and scroll down to 'Notes' and click 'Edit'
Now on the right hand side in the grey box click 'Edit Import Setting'
Enter your blog and away you go!

Adam, thanks for hint about Add This - think I will move ours.
Just looked at your site for the first time - it's amazing. Clear to follow, beautifully designed and going to make our vege garden look much better this summer :-)
Kay,
Have you the basic add this button or the analytics one?
Go to the add this website and sign up for an account - its free!
You can then track the links that people are sending. - the code will be different.
Currently trialling one with 'share' and one with 'bookmark' text on.
'bookmark' text is beating ' share' hands down, but people also use that one 25% of the time for adding our website to their favourites.

Yes I do have an account with tracking and its currently on the first 'share' version, positioned at the bottom of product information text - on every product. No one has ever used it apart from me.
We get more people use the BluePark 'Tell a Friend' button which has resulted in sales, but that doesn't build links back to the site - the one thing we all crave more of :-)
I'm going to try a different button in a different location and see what happens. Long job to remove all the existing ones though!

Hi Kay
You can include the code in the Template Manager/Your Template/Custom HTML/Product Detail Page (or Product Action, which is where I have put it) and it will then automatically appear on all your products, so you don't have to do them individually.
Regards
Pete
I have tried here and in the left hand column.
The left hand column was best for clicks on the add this button, as you can see from my website it is in a very prime position.

Thanks Pete, wish I'd thought of that before. At least I only have to 'remove' 130 of them and not replace them that way again.
Another late night coming LOL.
We changed the layout today to include a right hand column on ALL pages rather than just home and category pages, so will be able to sit the AddThis in there somewhere now. Phew!

We've now moved the AddThis higher up the page and put a better button on.
So far, it's been used once - at last! I didn't realised you could use it to add products to an Amazon wishlist, but there you go. Someone liked the bamboo towels :-)
Or was it you? LOL
Or was it you? LOL
Not me, but you've just been given me an idea. We normally exchange links with eachother...how about, no, no, wouldn't dare suggest it :D
