View Full Version : Random Block affecting Page Rank?

I would like to construct most of my Home Page based on random Blocks. At the moment I have a fairly static page which is seeded with keywords. If I start putting my text in Random Blocks, which only display at random times as people visit the site, does this mean Google and the other search engines will not see the text which is held in the Blocks as being part of the home page?

I don't want to negatively affect my search engine indexing and page rank by doing this. Any ideas/views welcomed.

I'm no expert, but as far as I understand it, if you click View then Source, if you can see the text in the file, then the search engines can see it. You may wish to wait for other responses before taking any action though :)

One technique i use (which i hope is right!) is search for my (your) page in google using your keywords you want to rank highly on. in the search results click on your cached page link and the page will highlight where google saw those keywords.

if the block doesnt appear or the words are not highlighted you can assume goolge did not read the keywords.

google will only cache and use the page it sees when it visits so it will not hang around and read all your blocks as they randomise - of course! HOWEVER, google does read meta words so perhaps it does read all the source code? but then, does it index it in its results? anyone know?

one other point which may be of interest - i know if you use javascript linking to external files to display on your page google will not see/read the external text. indeed if you check the cache which google sees the javascript does not appear.

a similar result occurs with hte currency settings block on bluepark - Rich, does this mean it uses javascript or is there another reason?

Googlebot is identified as a Robot, language and currency options are not populated for robots for technical reasons. Nothing to do with JavaScript, this one.

Answering the question posed, Google will "cache" whatever random content is displayed on the occasion Googlebot visits. Whether it's random or not, search robots just see a static page - a flat text file.

Makes sense, Google seeing it as at a specific point in time, which is fine as long as the randomised blocks have a good smattering of keywords.
