Discounts - exempt products

We're about to run a promotion for 10% off everything which we've done before and in the past, simply created a 10% global discount. Recently we've started selling a new product line that the publisher will not allow us to discount in any way. Therefore I would like to offer a discount on everything except for these 5 products.
Is there a way of adding a global discount and then adding exempt products rather than adding each product that DOES qualify individually (which would take forever!). Or is there another way I haven't worked out yet?!

You can use the Pricing Code field for this. With all of your products set to Pricing Code A, set your non-discountable products to Pricing Code B.

Also, bear in mind you can assign categories for discounts (as opposed to just individual products).

Just another question regarding the end date for a discount. Does the discount cease to be vaild at the start or end of the day entered?

The discount ceases to be valid on the end date at 00:00 (the start).

I have to say, from my experience in wholesale - this does sound like an anti-competitive practice if a supplier is trying to enforce a market price.

I don't blieve it's illegal, but Google adwords are clamping down on this....

eg if you typed HMV into google a year ago, the paid listings would include play.com and amazon uk

now it doesn't

there are still some around though.

eg - type in VENDA (a company like bluepark)

you'll see paid listings for competitors.

It is actually illegal to price fix. One of our suppliers wants us to maintain prices, but admits that legally they cannot force us to do so. They have threatened to stop supplying us if we don't comply, however...

Yes - the conditions of us supplying is that we do so at the set price. It doesn't really bother us. They're a small publisher, we're a small retailer so we're keeping each other happy.
