We have only just noticed the 'Orders In Progress' option and we are not sure what we should do about any orders found there. Some look recent, some are quite old. I assume they are, as it says, orders in progress OR, more concerning, abandoned orders.
Any pointers as to what we should do with them would be much appreciated.

Morning Jonathan,
There is an option in Bluepark which allows you to send follow up e-mails to the customers of these orders to try and encourage them to complete the order.
1) Configuration--->Order and set Abandoned basket e-mail (days)
2) Go into your default language in Site--->Language Manager and then E-mail Content. Scroll down and look for email_abandoned and enter your e-mail message.
We send the following 2 days after the abandoned orders
"Thank you for your recent visit to xxx.co.uk, during which you began the ordering process for the following items:
%b
We still have your details held securely on file. Therefore, if you decide that you would like to complete this order, please visit the link below:

We normally have large stocks of all products shown on our website. All products are originals and we do not sell refills or compatible products. Our prices are low because we work on low margins based on high volume sales!
Should you have any queries, please contact us by replying to this e-mail but we hope you will consider buying from xxx.co.uk in the near future.
Finally, We respect your privacy, and will send no further correspondence regarding this order."
It does not work for all but it does re-assure some people because they have come back and completed their order.
I think Bluepark will automatically delete orders in progress after 3 months (Maybe Rich can confirm this?)

We have automated emails set up for any orders in progress so that the the email is generated the day after the order was abandoned. Apart from that I don't think there's an awful lot more that can be done.
Some customers get back to us after receiving an automated email and state the reason for abandoning the order (usually the reason is they don't like or have had problems paying via Paypal for example). It's actually quite surprising how many customers who have abandoned an order return to the site (sometimes months after) and complete the transaction at a later date.
Every now and then we'll go through the orders in progress and delete the really old ones just to tidy it up a bit.

Thankyou to all for your help, that's cleared things up for us. We will certainly check out the automated email options.
