I was reading recently (dangerous, I know...) the suggestion that it was better for your business/credibility/SEO to have a landing page which introduces your business/brand before then allowing someone to click through to the site proper.

I'd be interested in opinions on this, as I'm not sure I agree, though I can maybe see the search engine/SEO advantages.

Hi,

That's an interesting thought, but it seems to go against the generally accepted wisdom that a web customer should be as few clicks away from a purchase as possible.

I agree, and the more I've thought about it, the less I like the idea.

Pete,

I agree with Gill that customers need to get to the product they want to purchase as quick as possible and should never be more than 3 clicks away from doing so else they just loose interest and will go elsewhere.

If you are using Google Adwords to advertise a particular product or brand the landing page should take the customer straight to the relevant product/brand page.

You could always make the links to Brand/Company information pages more prominent from the product pages so if the customer wants they can click on the click for more details.
