View Full Version : Google Image Search
Has anyone got any tips on getting your images listed on "Google Image Search"?
Our site has been running for nearly 3 years now and we've never had any of our images listed.
Since we recently moved to bluepark (3 months) I wondered if it would change but as yet nothing.
From the start we've always had the ALT text set as the product name for each image. I've recently ticked the box in Google webmaster tools to enable advanced image labelling but I'm not sure if that will make much difference.
Any advice gratefully received.
What actual file names do you use for the images, eg xxxx.gif or xxxxx.jpg etc?
I'm no expert in this area, but with another site on another host, and using the product name for the image file name, eg product-name.gif we do get a few visits from google image search.
So this together with good alt tags should help. It no doubt is influenced by how well the rest of the page / site is seo'd too.
Hi Lewey,
Thanks for your response.
We use jpg's and most of the relevant info from the alt tag is also part of the file name.
e.g. "Falke High Heel Holdups" have a file name "falke_41666_high_heel_hu.jpg"
We could try changing the "hu" to "hold_ups" as it wouldn't hurt I suspect (despite the work involved to do it on all the products!)

Can I ask why it is you want to appear on image results? The majroity of image searchers are looking for images to steal, not products to buy. Google products is something you should look into for that.

I completely understand your question. We're already fully utilising google products as you suggest.
There have been many views on the value of "image search" as a marketing tool. For me it's 2 fold.
1. My opinion is that it's a useful tool as a brand awareness builder. The more exposure you get the better. This obviously has to be balanced against excessive traffic with no intension to buy. But your name gets known by more and more people, and you may get a few links which help your ranking.
2. I would simply just like to know the reason why we're not listed!! If I image search for a specific product we sell, using the product name exactly as it appears on our site in the ALT tag, I see results from my competitors and nothing from us. It's just odd and I don't like not knowing. ;)

maybe something to do with google webmaster tools. Sign up for free.
I've noticed a page on there (see screenshot I've taken) which might be of use, although I've never used it personally.

Many thanks Daivd, but I've already done that. (as mentioned in my first post)
