View Full Version : How Stupid Are Some Shoppers!
It really amazes me how much time we spend building websites and shoppers take bob all notice of what we display on them.
For example we are building a new website and for some reason Google has found it already and we are getting hits.
On the website we have a deep block on the right hand side of every page which says in bold
"please note this site is currently under development and is NOT live. Prices and stock levels shown will NOT be accurate! If you wish to contact us for current prices and availability click here. Any orders place will NOT be processed"
The above is also shown when displaying the shopping basket as a block underneath where it says checkout (So in effect twice on this page if you include the right hand side block)
Also in the order confirmation e-mail it says any orders placed will not be processed
Guess what......people are still placing orders and expecting them to be delivered!
I think it just goes to show once shoppers find the product they want they get tunnel vision and take no notice of anything else displayed on the screen

Yep - we had a similar problem over Christmas. We had blocks on the site warning that orders placed after 19th December wouldn't be shipped until 5th Jan. We also added a line of text (in red and bold) that featured at the top of each stage of checkout and did the same for the order confirmation emails.
And when we returned to work on Monday.... lots of grumpy customers wondering where their orders were saying that they should have been made aware of the delay. Doh!

I has occasion to look at your site over the Christmas period, and saw your message straight away, so I just can't believe how stupid people can be.
We all have tales of customer idiocy - we had an irate phone call just before Christmas with a woman complaining she had ordered a toy and we had delivered an industrial hole-punch. When we asked if she had actually openened the parcel, she admitted she hadn't. The fact that a big hole punch would weigh about 10 times what the item we sent her would didn't enter into the equation. We had just recycled a cardboard box (a good thing, I'd have thought...?).

I used to sell sofa covers a while ago and had an irate customer contact me to say that the colour wasn't what she was expecting and she demanded a refund, since I did not sell any purple covers I advised her that she was contacting the wrong person! still not to be deterred she advised me that it was definately me she bought it from!
Again I pointed out that firstly I still did not sell that colour and secondly there was another seller that it might be? and mentioned their name and finally the penny dropped with a very curt opps I will send them an e-mail D'OH

Vicki - We've had that too with a customer moaning that their iPod didn't work anymore and demanding a refund. I (politely of course!) explained over and over again that we didn't sell iPods (and never have done) and could she be confusing us with someone else. She was sure she'd bought it from us and was threatening to take it further. In the end I told her to send the original receipt and we'd look into it - funnily enough we never heard from her again!
Oh, and when we used to sell on eBay we once had a "neutral" feedback about a faulty showerhead. Again, we don't sell showerheads (we're essentially a bookshop!) and pointed out to the buyer so they could retract their feedback but again they were sure it had come from us even though the bit where you leave feedback tells you which item you're leaving feedback for. They had bought a book from us (surprise, surprise) but were sure they'd bought the showerhead from us too!
Grrr, customers!

I don't mind the fact that they have made a mistake as we are all human (well most of us!) I just wish once they realise they would at least apologise. As I have always taught my children Manners cost nothing ;)
Hi,
I've got one now! Sending me a chasing message on a returned product... only thing is he has never ordered anything from me! As they say in Cornwall, "the dear of'em".
Had a little extra thought... it's a long shot but as this is an open forum it is just possible that one of these customers might stumble upon this discussion.
Cheers

Oh yes.
Our bugbear is the customer notes.
We added a line saying we could not take delivery instructions like "leave shed if no one in"
Yep everyday we get
Leave in blue bin
leave in greenhouse
leave with my granny she lives next door
you do have to wonder.

We say on our website in the delivery section that all goods must be signed for and can not be left without a signature. This is also stated in the order confirmation and order completed emails. We get comments on some orders like:-
leave outside back door
put under BBQ
leave in dog kennel
we will be at work all day. please delivery after 6pm
etc etc
Then they phone up complaining because the courier has put a calling card through the door instead of leaving the goods with the dog or somewhere weird!
It amazes us they expect you to leave it unsigned for and if it gets stolen its not their responsability
Then comes the comment "this is the last time we use your company" to which I reply :p

LOL- we've had some incredibly specific delivery instructions in the past too, e.g.:
"I'm at work on Monday all day and at toddler group from 10-12 on Tues so please don't deliver then. I do the school run each day from 8:45 - 9:15 and 3:00 - 3:30. Please don't deliver during these times".
But the best one is the customer who ordered using "express delivery" at 11:30pm on Sunday and was on the phone at 10am on Monday wanting to know where it was as the postman had been and gone! I explained politely that it's NEXT WORKING DAY delivery but she continued to whinge on. I then pointed out that even if I'd got in my car and driven it to her the second she ordered it, it would barely have got from Devon (where we are) to Scotland (her home) in that time. And yes we got the usual "well we won't be using you again".

We've installed a teleportation device in every one of our customer's living rooms, so we don't have this problem any more :D

I did laugh when I read this as I visualised someone coming home and finding a shed had been delivered ;)

Not as good as that, but here are a couple:
"please do not leave with any neighbour thank you" (who needs friends?)
"If out please leave behind garage through side gate under lean to." (could we have a map please?)

Regarding complex delivery instructions, I think that this one that we had at the weekend is the best yet:
"Should I be out when this order is delivered to my house, please leave it in the back garden (entrance by garage door). If it is raining, please leave it with next door neighbour (n. XX). Alternatively, leave it at the marketing office (my house is in a brand new development). Many thanks."
Hi
I've been trying to avoid adding more to this topic just in case (million to one chance) a customer strayed onto the forum! But I could not resist sharing this one. Customer who has on average bought one or two items yearly. Last order May 08 - ordered today and queried why he had not accrued any loyalty points! So pointed out to him that they only started in June 08! (sigh) Customers - I love them really.:)
