I just use private browsing for UK results or SSL Goolge for USA, I'm sure theres software to do it but it's not something I keep track of every day.

There is software but it doesn't come cheap. If you put in a search for software it will bring up results. I couldn't recommend any particular one though. Best to try and hit review sites to see if one comes up a lot, but reviews should always be taken with a pinch of salt.

I use this site as it seems to be accurate results and has various other checkers as well as keyword positions.

If you're willing to pay the extra money then I highly recommend SEOMoz, it's very feature rich & intuitive.
One feature is that you can check hundreds of keywords, and how your rankings change over time across all 4 major UK search engines.

You can sign up for a free 30 day trial which is worth doing, because in that 30 days you can use all of their tools to do some comprehensive SEO work on your site, even if you don't intend on carrying on your account once the free trial ends.

After that it's about $99 a month which is about £60, like I said it is expensive, but the free trial is definitely worth a go though.

I have to correct myself, SSL Google appears to give personalised results.

Thanks very much for all the replies.

I tried that searchenginegenie site but got a message about IP being blocked. I'll have a look at link-assistant and SEOMoz, which I can't afford but take your point about making use of the free trial

I actually don't really mind doing it by hand because I see who is my competition and what is changing as I look through all the listings but I suppose what I was wondering is this... I read that Google searches are somewhat tailored to an individual to a certain extent so when I type one of my keywords into Google and manually look down the list to see where my site is, is that even accurate? Is there any point if that is not what others might be seeing?

Someone with more SEO knowledge may correct me on this, but I think private browsing can give you a relatively good idea of natural results. It's called incognito in chrome, private browsing in firefox, and InPrivate in IE.

Ah ha, that is what Jim meant above. Thank you

Do I always leave it switched to private browsing or only when checking google positions?

Only when checking positions, you can use standard browsing for the rest of the time.

    Hi

If you have firefox you can use the rank checker add-on from Aaron Walls Seobook.com site - here is the link - http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/rank-checker/

My Hubby subscribes to SEOMOZ and one other tool that I can't remember, but we just use this. It can play up at times if you try and perform 100s of searches but it's pretty good for a free tool.

The SEO SERP Workbench addon for chrome is quick easy and free. Seems to do a decent job.
