    Default keyword help

Hi, I sent the following message to the ecommerce forum about 5 days ago but thought I'd move it across to technical (are keywords technical?!):

I'm not sure which keyword to choose for a category page (and also product pages) so I was hoping to get some advice.

At the moment I'm using the keyword 'Austin Reed Glasses' for a category page. Hardly any do a google search for this keyword though (less than 50/month supposedly), although it would be good to appear on the 1st page for it nevertheless! (we're currently on the 4th page).

My thought is to change it to 'Austin Reed Prescription Glasses' (the keyword 'prescription glasses' has a large number of searches but is also competitive...) or perhaps something like 'Austin Reed Online Eyeglasses' (the keyword 'online eyeglasses' has a good number of google searches and is less competitive than 'prescription glasses').

Someone recently told me that a good tactic is to choose 10 or 20 high demand (and not too competitive) keywords and spread them throughout the site in the category and product titles. What I don't want to do is adversely affect how the site is currently doing though.....(we're showing up quite well for individual product keywords where my keyword is something like: Austin Reed AR C03 - the man I spoke recommended a change to something like 'Austin Reed AR C03 Prescription Glasses' to help eventually get noticed for the high demand keywords)

So perhaps if I choose 'Austin Reed Prescription Glasses' (or 'Austin Reed AR C03 Prescription Glasses' for the product) - in the long run, if I use 'prescription glasses' scattered throughout the website, we may eventually move up the rankings for this keyword...and perhaps it won't affect a search for 'Austin Reed Glasses' as I've used the word 'glasses' in the 'Austin Reed Prescription Glasses' keyword (same if I use 'eyeglasses').

    Thanks for reading,

    Iain

    Hi Iain
I think the reason you did not get a reply is because there is so much uncertainty at moment to do with Google's recent algorithms and consequential loss of search positions. The best I can suggest is that you do what Google recommends and that is make a content rich site designed for customers. You could perhaps try some article writing as well.

I don't know about your industry, but from what you are saying you are already checking keyword volumes and how competitive they are so you are doing the right thing. For high search volume keywords previously the advice would have been you need to have lots of links using the keyword in the anchor text. This appears to have changed after the Penguin update from Google, though no one can really be sure other than Google themselves. So my advice would be yes, choose some high volume keywords but don't go overboard with placing them on site, add plenty of original, fresh and customer useful content to the site with a tiny smattering of the keywords, do some articles, PR and lots of social media and then you are probably quite safe and should see some benefit. Hope that is of help.

ps - forgot to mention, keywords really are marketing/search engines.
