Offer gift vouchers with Bluepark

Gift vouchers are a great way to encourage customers to purchase on your site even when they cannot make up their mind what to buy. They are particularly useful to promote as last minute gifts as they can be delivered instantly online. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about setting up your own gift vouchers to offer your customers this Christmas.

Just follow our handy 'how to' guide...

How to: Configure your gift vouchers

To configure how the Gift Vouchers will work on your site go to Site> Configuration> E-Commerce Options.

Gift Voucher Configuration

Under the Gift Vouchers field there are two options:

1. Allow immediate access – this means the customer purchasing the voucher will have immediate access to the gift voucher via a link on the Order Summary page to send it to the recipient. By default, this is presented as the following text - ‘As you have purchased a gift voucher, you may have it sent via e-mail to a friend or family member. Click Here to send your gift voucher.’

You can change the wording of this text in the Language Manager. You may want to change both the single voucher text and the multiple voucher text.  Make sure you use the variable %a within these fields to pull through the ‘Click Here’ link so the customer can access the gift voucher.

2. Require Activation – this means the gift voucher order will be set to Pending until it is set to Complete within the Order Manager. As soon as it is changed an email will be sent to the purchasing customer. This email includes a link to the customer's Account section on your website where they can access the gift voucher.

Both methods allow the purchasing customer to enter the recipient’s details and a personal message. Once they have clicked on 'submit' the recipient will receive an email with details of how to redeem the voucher. Once again, you can change the wording to these emails within the Language Manager.

Set the number of months you want your gift vouchers to be valid for in the field below.

How to: Set up your gift voucher design

You can, of course, use the default gift voucher design but you can also create a unique design for your brand. Go to Catalogue> Voucher Designs and you will see the default gift voucher already set up called Stock Design. This Stock Design cannot be edited and you will need to click on the Copy icon on the right hand side to be able to build your own.

Voucher Design

Design Name: Give your unique gift voucher a new name.

Partial SKU: You will need to create a gift voucher product within the Product Manager for customers to be able to purchase a voucher. The partial SKU will be used within the SKU of this gift voucher product so that the system knows which design to link to it.

Background Image: This is the image of the voucher design. It can be viewed by the recipient in a web browser and it can be printed as a physical gift voucher for the purchaser to give. Click on the magnifying glass to the right hand side of this field to see the current design. You can download the layered Photoshop image via the link underneath to use as a template for your own design.

Custom Design HTML: You can edit the default HTML for the gift voucher by clicking on the link underneath and pasting this into the source of this field. Only attempt this if you are confident with editing HTML.

How to: Set up your gift voucher product

The final step is to set up your gift voucher product. This is done in exactly the same way as normal products but you will need to remember to use the Partial SKU that you set up  in the Voucher Design as part of your Product SKU. For instance, if your Partial SKU is 'vouch', then your Product SKU could be '100vouch'.

At the bottom of the Properties tab within the Product Editor make sure the Gift Voucher field is ticked.

You can either set a single value for your gift vouchers, such as £10, or set different values using Variant SKUs, such as £10, £25 and £50. Just remember to include the Voucher Design Partial SKU in each Variant SKU.  You can even create variants for different designs, giving the customer a choice.  These could be 'birthday design', 'thank you design' or 'Christmas design'.

If you have any questions regarding setting up your designs, please leave a comment below. Of course, you can always add a link to your own online gift vouchers at the same time. You never know we might even feature them in a future blog post!

I've had a look at them on your site and it looks like you've resolved this. Please let me know if you are still having any issues with it?

How do you stop discounts applying to gift vouchers?

Set your gift voucher product as Pricing Code B in the Values tab in the Product Editor. All other products, unless you have changed them, will be set to Pricing Code A by default.

When you create a discount, instead of selecting 'All (global method)' in the Qualifying Pricing Codes field, you would select 'A'. This way the discount will only apply to products that are set with Pricing Code A and therefore the gift vouchers won't be included.

I wish that you had an export feature on this, as we would love to be able to verify any gift vouchers unspent etc., so that you can accurately report in year end. Surely its not too difficult to put a little export button on the gift voucher page?

This isn't something we've been asked for by anyone else. Unfortunately it's not just a matter of putting a button in. This would be a fair amount of work to create this feature and would only be something we would do if there was more interest in it.

Hi, Is the image for the voucher product the voucher design or do I have to add a generic gift voucher image

You can use the stock voucher design if you wish or make a copy of it to create your own. This is then used for the voucher design.

Also just checking what is the steps the customer takes when the order is complete. I have purchased a voucher and received the email saying click here to email the voucher - but it takes me back to the customers own personal details to update. should they be sent to a different page

When the purchaser clicks on the link in the order confirmation email, they are taken to the site to sign in. Once they've done this they are immediately presented with a form where they can specify who to send it to, with name, email address and message fields. Alternatively, they can click on the View Here link on the same page and print the voucher out to give to the recipient in person.

I'd like to download the stock voucher and design a new background, but I can't see how / where I would then upload my background back into the system?

You need to make a copy of the Stock design by clicking the copy icon to the right of it in the Voucher Designs section. Once you've done this follow the steps above under the How to: Set Up Your Gift Voucher Design heading. The Background Image is where the new design image file is uploaded.
