Default Google remarketing errors on category level pages

I'm having a hellish time trying to get remarketing working on my website.

I've eventually got the code installed and being recognised by google but it's returning errors on category level pages which obviously don't have products in them.

Has anyone else found this? I can't believe I would need to go through and install the code on individual pages.

Is there a solution? Or something I'm missing?

If you put the code in the template it populates all pages, using %ecomm_pagetype and other %ecomm_xxx Google picks up all of them, just shows page type as an error but I believe its there error. Our re-marketing works OK.
