Default Discount Codes - Major Issue

Hi all, after a bit of help as we have a major issue and [possibly] found a major flaw in the system, but hoping there is a way around it before we lose too much money.

On one of our sites, we offer a discount for bulk buy, so for arguments sake, if you order 1 x product, it costs 10.50, if you order 5 it costs 6.50 per box.

We then issued a 20% discount code as part of the new website launch. We sent out to 3600 customers. When the new code is used, for say 5 boxes, it takes a further 20% off the 10.50, not the 6.50 as we wanted it to do. So we lose quite a bit of money.

There must be a way around this as we see it as very, very fundamental to ecommerce, but cant figure it out. We tried to dabble with thresholds, working out the maths around different prices, but with many products at different prices, it was impossible to use this fix.

Any ideas or advice would be hugely appreciated.

Have you clicked Override Non Coupons so the discounts don't stack?

EDIT: Oh hang on, I misunderstood you, you still want them to be able to take off the 20% but on the multi-buy price not single price. Ignore my first comment!

Are the 10.50 and the 6.50 different products in their own right or variants of one product?

Or is the 6.50 derived as a discount on the 10.50 price using a discount code (not the 20% discount code)?

The 6.50 is set up as a discount for the product. There are various thresholds for amount bought. Same product in this case. The 20% is a further discount code live for 3 months.
