If you go into site--> tax rules you can see all the country codes there.

    China is CN

Go into site--->configuration--->site options and enter CN in the IP Addresses To Ban box.

The country code for china is cn, which would block all chinese sites (assuming you don't sell there) however lots of bigger chinese sites use .com. so the country code may not work for them.

we are currently be targeted by biadu spiders, not an undue problem but we do get offers from chinese suppliers.

    Sorry Geoff slow typing!

Is that a recent thing? We have had the same, but just in the last few days.

I've also been targetted by Baidu spiders a lot recently (last week or so). Two of them spent most of yesterday crawling.

We've had them on our site pretty much constantly for the last week - I banned China in our IP addresses to ban list yesterday. Seems to have solved the problem

We also had them on all day, what are they doing and why ban them?

Indeed is there anything bad about spiders trying to crawl the site? Don't yahoo and google spiders do it also?

I had Germany crawling all over my site last night - can't ban them as we have a number of customers in Germany, but I banned the ip address

If you have customers in Germany why would you want to ban German search engines crawling your site. Surely this defeats the object of you selling to them?

We added China (CN) to our blocked list but we still get a fair few China IP hits.
