I would add that you choose a time when you are quiet for orders. Try to change any important high value links to the https version soon after the change (you do lose some link juice on 301 redirect so getting high value inbound links changed seems to mitigate this to some extent). Check that any links out are to https or your will get an error in your url which will be more off putting for customers than no padlock!

So true.... and the chances of someone falling over the option in the configuration are slim. Even after nearly 10 years on BP I find things I did not know about.

I made the switch yesterday for the inks and stationery company - no hitch at all.

But I did get this from Serpfox today !!

"The keyword 'hp ink cartridges norfolk' (allmyink.com) changed its search engine position on Google (GB) by -44 positions moving from 10 to 54."

Does this matter or do I have to do something within Google Webmaster somewhere? I get slightly bemused by Webmaster, Analytics etc ... but if I test the sitemap I get this

A useful little checklist would be helpful for those making the switch to https if anybody feels helpful please (pretty please, as I think Gill says ...)

You need to submit sitemap.xml not sitemap.html to Google Webmaster tools.

You can't convert your site to HTTPS without having an SSL certificate.

Wow - this is great news! Thanks James - we will look at making the switch after carefully following your (and Richard's) advice.

We have been bitten before with URL changes....

    UPDATE:

Switched to https about a week ago.

Yesterday all PR's turned to ZERO. All of them.

However, positions on organic searches remained the same.

Sales have gone up fivefold, while Google Adword cost halved.

But it is impossible to say the reason, because after the switch to https, I also sighned up with www.reviews.co.uk. Sales jump noticed the day I crossed the 30 reviews line.

This is probably down to the PR Tool bar being turned off

But well done on the sales increase!

Undoubtedly. I too have seen an improved conversion rate. There was a dip in organic traffic about 3 or 4 days after the switch but quickly returned to normal as Google crawled and indexed the https version.

Did not know that. So, there is no way to find the PR of a page any more? Never?

That is like losing a part of me. Sad.

    Never ever?

I don't think that is has had any real relevance for a long time.
