Default Changing a main category with sub categories to one main category

Does anyone know the quickest and easiest way to change a category with many sub categories, all with products, into one big category with all the products in one. Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm also interested, I have done it a couple of times manually, but it's time consuming. I also remembered at the last minute to do the url redirects. I then use attributes to filter the sub categories for the left column. An easier work round would be great.

We created a new category, transferred all the products from the sub categories to the new one and then deleted the sub cats, and then renamed using the original name. As you go along make sure you set the redirects for the sub cats! You can transfer by going to products.
