I've received a few emails today from google, advertising their "new search console" which apparently has been "rebuilt from the ground up to provide the tools and insights that site owners and SEOs have been asking for."
Apparently nobody asked for "accurate information"...
I gave up on the original search console as it appeared to be utterly useless at telling me anything vaguely accurate. Picking a site at random, a year ago there were 968 pages indexed, according to the "index status", which has gone down over time, for no apparent reason, to 16 pages indexed currently. But then in the sitemap section it is telling me I have submitted 961 pages of which 729 are indexed.
So which is it 16 or 729??? How can the same search console have such wildly disagreeing results? If I go into google and type site:[mydomainname].co.uk it returns 516 results, so clearly my site IS being indexed, and pages ARE being listed and found in google.
It is the same for all my websites - lots a year ago, dropping to almost none in the index status but still lots on the sitemap page.
So, onto the new "rebuilt from the ground up" Search Console... This tells me I have 6 valid indexed pages, which again is clearly nonsense, and 1.8k "excluded" pages. Of those most appear to have been excluded for being a "page with redirect".
So again it appears to be completely useless.
But has anyone else tried it yet? Are you seeing the same results? It's a bit weird that it thinks all my pages have a redirect, unless that is something bluepark related...?
