How to add Klarna on-site messaging

How to promote Klarna on your online shop

So, you've created a Klarna Payments account, and are offering it as an option within checkout on your online shop, but now you want to make sure your customers know that they have more ways to pay. There are a few ways you can do this on your site, with some help from both Klarna and Bluepark. Just have a read of our guide below to get you started.

Feature on-site messaging

You will be required to display Klarna's on-site messaging within your online shop from 1 March 2024 under Klarna's updated advertising requirements.

Klarna On-site Messaging

On-site Messaging allows you to add dynamic messages to your product pages using Placements to highlight easy ways for customers to pay. This can be shown on every product on the site by quickly installing Klarna's on-site messaging tool and choosing how you would like it to display.

Step 1: Activate on-site messaging

Firstly, you will need to switch On-site Messaging on within your Klarna account. To do this follow the quick steps below.

  • Select On-Site Messaging within the Tools section in your Klarna portal
  • Agree to their terms and conditions

Step 2: Install the code

Next, you need to add the code to your online shop to connect the On-site Messaging to your Klarna account. Just follow the steps below.

  • Click into the On-Site Messaging section again within your Klarna portal and go to Installation
  • In the Add code to your site section, click on the Copy to clipboard button
  • Go to Design/Layout > Theme Manager in your online shop's admin panel and click on the Advanced Editor button
  • In the Pages tab, paste the code into the Opening Body field, making sure you don't copy over any code that's already in there
  • Save the theme and click on the green tick to confirm
  • If you are using more than one theme on your site, you will need to repeat this for each theme

Step 3: Add your placements

Lastly, you will need to add the On-site Messaging to the product page within the theme on your online shop using Placements. Simply go through each step below.

  • Click into the On-Site Messaging section again within your Klarna portal and go to Placements
  • Click on the Copy to clipboard button on the placement you want to add
  • Go to Design/Layout > Theme Manager in your online shop's admin panel and click on the Advanced Editor button
  • In the Custom HTML tab, click the HTML button for the Product Detail Page field
  • Paste the code where you want the placement to appear on the product page. Make sure all the code is placed on one line.
  • If the code of the Placement you've chosen contains data-purchase-amount="", you will need to add the Bluepark price (minor units) variable between the quotes, as shown below.

Customise your placements

Klarna Placement Examples

Klarna allow you to customise the style of the Placement you've added to your site. You can use the classic Klarna pink to make it stand out or change it to a colour that blends well with your theme, change the colour of the font, edit the layout and much more. Just follow the steps below to style your Placement as required.

  • Click into the On-Site Messaging section again within your Klarna portal and go to Placements
  • Click on the Custom Design button on your Placement
  • Make the changes you want within the Text, Layout and Logo sections
  • Click Publish and Confirm and your changes will be updated autoamtically on your site

Create a Klarna landing page

Klarna encourage you to create a landing page within your online shop to help customers understand how Klarna works and the different payment options you offer. This can reduce the number of enquiries you may receive otherwise, as well as promoting easier ways to pay, so the customer has more choice.
